Defending Through the Center

In this tutorial I want to talk about defending the through balls and lob through balls in the center of the pitch.

Now, I had already mentioned that we're going to be playing off of the ball. So what happens when your opponent is creating a counter attack of his own?

Well it's your job to spot a potential run, and then use the right stick to take control of that defender and do your best to be physical to break it up. Run him out of the play, make him stumble -- do what you can to make your opponent hold the ball for an extra second and pass it somewhere else. A ball coming in over the top is hard to defend, especially if they have the speed advantage.

Another thing you can do is to pull your keeper out to help shrink the room the receiver of the pass has. If you're bumping him and pushing and pulling him, and the keeper is in his face, more than not you're going to break up this counter attack before he gets a 1 on 1 with your keeper.

Now if you really do keep struggling with the lob through balls, I'd suggest making a custom formation. This custom formation should have 3 center backs and one extra center defender between your row of center backs and your keeper, called a sweeper. This prevents anyone from getting in and over your last line of defense with lob through balls.

This can be used to make a formation change after your opponent proves that he's only capable of playing through the center. When you come across a player like this, pause the game and change your formation to a variation of a 1-3-3-1-2 or a 1-3-3-3. This formation only works great against lob through balls, and does a terrible job defending the wings or crosses.

Now, as a whole here, your defense to attacks through the center is you playing off of the ball. I don't want that to get lost in the individual concepts.

You have to play off the ball, and spot potential runs as they happen. Furthermore, you have to cut off the passes. Essentially you're playing offense while defending.

You're looking where the ball could go. You're looking at where the next pass is. You're trying to stay one step ahead of your opponent as he's worried about the defender directly in his face. When he turns to pass because he can't handle the pressure, you're going to be there to intercept the ball.
