The inscription on both the Gallipoli and New Zealand Memorials from a speech by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk:

"Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives! You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bossom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." Atatürk, 1934

The Memorial to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk located on a ridge above Tarakena Bay on the south coast of Wellington looks out over Cook Strait. The site was chosen for its remarkable likeness to the landscape of the Gallipoli peninsula and was NZ's response to the Turkish government building a commemorative site at Anzac Cove.

The memorial was designed by Ian Bowman and comprises a marble crescent, a bust of Atatürk, inscriptions and soil from Anzac Cove.

Wreathlaying services are held at the memorial on ANZAC Day (25 April), and during August by the Wellington Company of the Wellington and Hawke's Bay Battalion Group to commemorate the Battle for Chunuk Bair.
